PRACTICAL GUIDE
What is GEO, and how does it relate to SEO and AI visibility?
An explanation of Generative Engine Optimization: expert content, web retrieval, sources, measurement and the limits of AI-generated answers.

What GEO means
Generative Engine Optimization is a term used for improving content and its suitability for generative search. The practical task is to make information clear, specific, accessible and verifiable. It is not a separate technical standard or a paid route to a place in an AI answer.
SEO, GEO and AI Visibility have different scopes
SEO addresses technical access, structure and content for organic search. GEO emphasises expert answers, context and relationships between topics. AI Visibility takes a broader view of business identity, expertise, external sources and available signals. These activities can support each other without requiring duplicate pages.
Model training and web retrieval are different
A language model can use information learned during training, while a product with search enabled can retrieve additional information from the web. Publishing a page does not mean you are training the model. Capabilities depend on the product and mode, so a permanent division into static and up-to-date products is misleading.
What Google requires for AI results
Google says its foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. No special AI schema or new machine-readable file is required. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.
What a useful edit looks like
For a B2B service, explain the problem it addresses, when it applies, its limitations and who provides the expertise. Connect it to actual completed work. Headings, lists and comparison tables help readers when they express meaningful differences.
Trust, structured data and usability
Identify authorship, evidence and the conditions behind claims. Structured data should match visible content. A fast, readable page helps visitors after a click; it does not justify a promise that a specific UX metric necessarily increases AI citations.
What can be measured
Distinguish citations, mentions, visits and customer actions. Google includes its AI features in Search Console’s overall Web reporting. Bing provides AI Performance for the experiences it covers, not the whole AI market. For manual observations, record the question, language, date, mode and sources shown.
Does each AI product need a different version?
Do not create near-identical pages for different models. Start with accurate information and a sound technical foundation. Check platform-specific crawling and measurement rules where relevant. A difference in one answer is an observation, not proof of a universal algorithm.
